ConstructionSkills puts practical skills on show at SkillCity

27 June 2005

In a bid to encourage young people to consider a career in construction, ConstructionSkills - the Sector Skills Council for the construction industry - is giving thousands of kids the opportunity to learn new skills at SkillCity 2005.

The show, being held from 6 – 9 July at Excel, in London’s Docklands, is one of the UK’s largest interactive careers and training events for young people, expected to attract over 120,000 young people aged 12-30.

Visitors to ConstructionSkills’ stands (DC15 and DC34), in the Design and Construction Zone, will be able to get a hands-on experience in: plastering; steeplejacking, bench joinery, lead working, roofing and brickwork. There will also be a Careers Clinic on hand to answer any questions about working in the industry.

Paul Sykes, CITB-ConstructionSkills Recruitment Manager, commented: “The construction industry is growing rapidly and needs 86,000 new people in craft, technical and management roles this year. SkillCity is a great opportunity for young people to get advice and information about their future.”

The National Construction College (NCC) will be running a ‘Mini Digger Challenge’ which will see young people use their skills to hook as many ducks from a pond or scoop as many golf balls from a sandpit using diggers. The highest scorer on both events will win a trip to NCC in Norfolk - with up to eight classmates - to learn how to drive diggers, excavators and other plant machinery.

ConstructionSkills has worked with the Building Crafts College and the National Heritage Training Group to demonstrate traditional construction skills, such as thatching and stonemasonry, on the Traditional Crafts stand in the Design and Construction Zone.

Young people will also be able to participate in a fitting out and basic construction demonstration - carried out by school pupils from Canning Town, London. The demo has been organised by Let’s Build, BCC and ConstructionSkills.
