Martin Johnson, acting deputy general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said:
"The key stage one tests provide a better model for measuring children's learning than the other key stage tests because teachers play a bigger role in the assessments and the results are not as hyped-up as the other results.
"However, the key stage one statistics still only measure a small amount of the learning and teaching taking place in primary schools.
"We need politicians to rethink their blind devotion to external tests and statistics and listen to education professionals and parents, who know the current system of endless national testing is narrowing the curriculum and putting children off learning.
"We are particularly concerned that the government thinks starting formal learning at younger ages will lead to higher achievement later.
"Organisation for Economic Co-operation Development evidence shows the countries with the highest attainment overall start their formal education when children are older. And all our feedback shows that young children learn best through play."
