On the agenda: Thursday

29th July 2010

On the eve of becoming prime minister David Cameron was convinced his bid to enter Downing Street had failed, it is revealed in a documentary to be broadcast tonight.

Interviewed for the BBC's 'Five Days that Changed Britain' Cameron said that just 24 hours before he was resigned to remain leader of the opposition, believing that his attempts to woo the Liberal Democrats had failed.

And it is suggested that Nick Clegg "bluffed" the Conservative leader into offering the Lib Dems a referendum on a change to the voting system by telling him he had been offered more by Labour than was actually the case.

Caught by surprise at Brown's resignation Cameron is said to have called his wife to tell her to "get your frock on" as they were going to the Palace.

On the topic of resignation, the government is today set to announce plans to scrap the default retirement age of from October 2011.

Under current rules employers can make staff to resign at 65, but the government wants to change this as people are living longer.

Labour leadership hopefuls will tonight take part in hustings in Oxford. Shadow foreign secretary leadership contender David Miliband will participate in a Q&A session in Cambridge. While his brother, shadow energy secretary Ed Miliband will hold a Q&A session with local party members in Coventry.
